similar in some very specific ways, these two manuals also differ in their general format, their citation format, and in their overall content. Understanding the difference between the Chicago
Manual of Style and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is based not only in the comprehension of the content of these manuals, but also in assessing
the overall purpose, authority, currency, format and usability of these texts. One of the major differences between these two citation guides has to do with their proposed audiences. Though
both guides are designed to be used by a variety of different types of writers, the Chicago Manual of Style is directed for use by academic writers, editors and publishers
with a focus towards non-scientific authorship. Chicago is commonly used for academic writing in content areas that include English, History, Political Science, and similar subject areas. Though the
Chicago Manual does not preclude the use for scientific research, the American Psychological Association manual is more commonly utilized for subjects that include science and psychology. Because of the
preference for the use of these particular manuals for specific content areas, the audience and purpose of the manuals seems slightly different. The Chicago Manual of Styles audience, then, is
