11, 3007 might reveal about the structure under study. Discussion The obvious thing that leaps out is the date. This dig is 1,000 years in the future, but that doesnt
mean 9/11 will have been forgotten. The Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, nearly 1,000 years ago, and yet the date is familiar to almost every student who has
ever cracked a book on European history. It is not likely that September 11, 2001 will be forgotten either. However, the next question is whether or not the date has
any relevance to the building, or if its a misleading avenue of conjecture. It seems fair to say that its misleading, since Chicago was not attacked and the dig is
not taking place in a building that was brought down by a terrorist. Also, scheduling the dig on the anniversary of the attack could be sheer coincidence, so its probably
best not to get off-track looking for clues that are not there. What would we reasonably expect future archaeologists to know about Chicago that is relevant? Presumably they will
understand the weather: they will know that Chicago in 2007, no matter what its like in 3007, is windy, hot and humid in the summer and freezing in the winter.
They would expect to find buildings that have both heating and cooling systems. We might speculate that if they find a room air conditioner instead of central air, the building
might have been housing for lower-income residents. They would also look for insulation, plumbing, and electrical systems, which are almost universal in 2007. That is, the building codes of the
City of Chicago mandate that homes be habitable, and that means they have to meet the specifications for water, sewer and power when they are first built. Whether or not
