Ask any person young or old what comes to mind when they think of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and more than
likely one will hear these words: The cow did it. But beyond the legend of how it started is the realization of what actually transpired over the three-day conflagration
and the resurrection that immediately followed. What transpired during the three days it took to fully extinguish the fire was nothing less than total and complete devastation - sheer
ruin for a city that was once a prospering community. The statistics were staggering for that era: 300 lives lost; 334,270 left homeless; 4 square miles utterly destroyed; 18,000
