Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 7 page paper shows the student how to carry out an hypothesis test using chi squared to ascertain if there is a relationship between depression and pain in reflex sympathetic dystrophy patients. The paper demonstrates the process of hypothesis testing and shows the calculation for the chi squared test. The bibliography cites 7 sources.

is severe pain. Using a sample of 100 patients, 60 depressed and 40 non depressed pain levels are assessed and then tested against the depression state of the patient to
assess if there is a link between the pain level and the manifestation of depression. Using a chi squared test, which tests for a correlation between two variables, it can
be stated with a 95% degree of certainty that the occurrence of depression and pain appear to be directly related. This study, undertaken with a well defined sample groups
is a repeatable experiment. The confirmation of this initial finding have direct implications for the care of reflex sympathetic dystrophy patients. The prevention of pain may result in lower levels
of depression manifestation, alternatively, as causation is not proven, although the link is present, treating depression may help reduce the levels or perceived pain. Text The
theory that is being tested is the relationship between depression and severe pain in a sample of patients suffering form reflex sympathetic dystrophy. There are many studies that indicate a
link between severe pain and depression (Lacroix, 2003). To test in patients suffering from reflex sympathetic dystrophy we can undertake a statistical analysis. Making use of a sample of 100
patients, the test group is made up of 60 depressed patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy, as a control there is a send sample group of 40 non depressive patients. The
dependant variable is their current state of depression, either depressed or not depressed. The independent variables or the level of pain, divided into four categories, no pain, mild pain, moderate
pain or severe pain. These concepts of pain were defined by reference to a scoring system that assessed the impact of pain on an individuals everyday activities.
