Discussion The prompt for this paper was to avoid doing a biographical sketch of Nimitz and instead consider the things he did that made a significant impact. This is a much more difficult assignment than simply recounting someones life, and the student will probably find it necessary to pull odd bits of information from many sources, and make inferences about what sort of man Nimitz was, and what his insistence on exercise, for example, meant for his men and their ability to fight. That said, lets see what we can find out about him and his accomplishments. Chester Nimitz was a career military officer, and so his accomplishments relate strongly to the military as opposed to, for instance, running for office and having an impact that way. Although his most important contribution probably came during WWII, we can get an idea of what Nimitz was like from the way he handled the crew of the Augusta, a cruiser he commanded in 1933. When he took command of the ship, it was in China, and the crew was highly motivated (Morton, 2003). Nimitz had a gift for training junior officers by giving them "responsibility associated with authority and above all a very real accountability" (Morton, 2003, p. 20). He believed "very strongly" that the "junior officers should handle the ship," which was not the way the Navy did things at the time (Morton, 2003). Nimitz was also aware that the tropical climate would take a heavy toll on crew members, and so he "placed tremendous emphasis on sports and assigned an officer to coach every team on his ship" (Morton, 2003, p. 20).
