Cherokee art stretches back in time some 11,000 years to the ancient ancestors of the people that are known today
as the Cherokee (Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation 31). Like the art of all peoples, the most modern manifestation of Cherokee art is the result of a long
evolution. That evolution occurred in response to a number of factors. Among the most prevalent of these factors is the deep connection the Cherokee have with the natural
world (Mooney IX). Even the most simplistic representatives of their art reflect that connection. Among the oldest examples of Cherokee art are
those art forms that have been fashioned from the minerals of the earth itself. The ancient spear points and ax heads were not influenced much by the exposure to
the elements that results in the demise of so many art forms. So too were the ancient examples of Cherokee pottery resistant to the temperature changes, rain, snow, and
sometimes raging heat that it has been subjected to over the years. Cherokee pottery is, in fact, one of the most
simplistic Cherokee art forms but yet it is one of the most utilitarian. Cherokee craftsmanship is no more evident than in an expertly crafted hand built pot from ancient
times, however, than it is in its modern manifestation. Many times even the designs and building styles have remained constant. Other times, they have changed quite dramatically.
