Medicine today has made many advances in the treatment of a group of diseases known as cancer. Just like saying an individual has an infection says
nothing about the cause of the infection (bacterial or viral, for example), what part of the body is involved by the infection (is it in the skin, the heart, or
the brain), or how severe the infection is. A similar thought process must be used when one speaks of cancer. As a general statement, a cancer, or to use a
better word, a malignancy, is when a group of cells in the body, sometimes for reasons known, other times for reasons unknown, decide to grow wild, taking over the part
of the body in which they have originated. They often times spread to other parts of the body, eventually causing the death of the affected individual. So just like an
infection can begin in any body part, so can a malignancy. And just as an infection can be mild (affecting only a small part of the body, like a
fingernail, which can easily be treated), or severe, affecting the entire brain, making treatment difficult if not impossible-malignancies can be localized (for example, a small area of the skin), or
