care, and chemotherapy. This paper will describe how chemotherapy ("chemo") works, and some of the drugs used in the treatment. It also discusses their side effects and the
types of cancer they are used to combat. How Chemotherapy Works "Chemo" is a word meaning "chemical" and "chemotherapy" is the "use of particular drugs along or in combination
to treat cancer" ("What is Chemotherapy"). There is also the term "anti-cancer drugs," which is a broader term applied to a "number of different types of drugs which affect
cancer" ("What is Chemotherapy"). "Chemotherapy" generally is understood to apply to those drugs used with the primary goal of killing cancer cells ("What is Chemotherapy"). Chemotherapy uses different mechanisms
to attack cancer, and since the various drugs perform different functions, they can be used in combination, provided "normal organs are not significantly impaired" ("What is Chemotherapy"). This approach
of combining drugs is being used today, with most patients receiving more than one drug ("What is Chemotherapy"). In general, "chemotherapy targets any area where cancer cells are located, in
comparison to surgery and radiation which target defined areas" ("What is Chemotherapy"). Chemotherapy may be used as a preventative measure, to keep cancer from developing in certain areas, or
it may be used to reduce tumors ("What is Chemotherapy"). The chemotherapy drugs used in this way destroy the cancer cells "by stopping them from growing or multiplying at
one or more points in their life cycle" and most oncologists recommend "multi-modal chemotherapy," the practice of giving more than one drug ("What is Chemotherapy"). The task of the
oncologist is to determine how much of the drug to give so that it will successfully kill the cancer without affecting normal cells ("What is Chemotherapy"). Chemotherapy Agents
