lives and their marriages. They are lonely people and they find in each other some sort of solace. While one may read this story and argue that the two people
really did fall in love, and were planning on a future where they could be happy together in the end, the story can also be seen as one that only
presents two people who need some excitement, some drama, some adventure in their life. The following paper examines how these two characters are likely more immersed in the adventure of
their relationship rather than the relationship itself. The Lady with the Pet Dog In the beginning of the story we know, fairly quickly, that Dmitri is an unhappy
and lonely man in his normal life. He is also a man who apparently thinks little of women, though he needs them: "He had begun being unfaithful to her long
ago--had been unfaithful to her often, and, probably on that account, almost always spoke ill of women, and when they were talked about in his presence, used to call them
the lower race" (Chekov). In this we see that he clearly needs women to offer him some sort of excitement in his life, to offer to fill some void in
his otherwise dull life. When we meet the woman with the dog we begin to see that she is young and innocent and lonely. She also lived a dull
life: "Her expression, her gait, her dress, and the way she did her hair told him that she was a lady, that she was married, that she was in Yalta
for the first time and alone, and that she was dull there" (Chekov). She even mentions, when they start speaking, that this place is dull, indicating she finds nothing in
