family in the American Midwest seem to have little in common. But underneath, families are much the same everywhere. This paper compares the plays A Raisin in the Sun and
The Cherry Orchard. Discussion The two plays seem to be most similar in their handling of the theme of home. For the family in Chekhov, the house - and more
importantly, the cherry orchard surrounding it - is symbolic of their identity, and particularly that of Lyubov, the owner (Chekhov). The house and orchard are filled with memories of happier
times, and now, facing financial distress, they have to leave it (Chekhov). In fact, Lyubov and her brother Leonid are in denial about the extent of their debt; Lopahin keeps
warning them, but they simply will not hear him (Chekhov). Lyubov in particular is a spendthrift, giving gold to a beggar, for example, without a second thought (Chekhov). The entire
family is careless with money. They also live in the past, or more accurately, bring it into the present; their servant Feers is 87 years of age (Chekhov). He is
almost the embodiment of the past, because he can remember what it was like decades before. When they finally leave the house, at the end of the play, he simply
