overall shortcomings when giving literary life to her protagonist. Adulterous in nature, the love affair between the two couples sets the stage for the illicit behavior inherent to such activity,
a point in which Oates is particularly harsh when it comes to presenting Anna in such weak and unsophisticated images. The powerlessness Oates infuses into her female character serves
to fuel an uneasiness in the reader about the entire adulterous affair; in Chekhovs version, however, the reader successfully glosses over this otherwise important fact because of the authors ability
to paint a literary image of picture perfect love that envelopes the reader in a rapturous current. An unsettling vulnerability permeates through Oates version, a reality that is wholly distracting
from the primary tale of love shared by both versions. Thoughts of suicide and murder overshadow any sense of happiness Anna may experience, clearly illustrating how her lack of
inner strength and fortitude is what stands in the way of her finding true happiness. Perhaps the illicit nature of her adulterous ways preys upon her conscience and makes
her incapable of possessing the same poise and character that Chekhovs protagonist maintains, a glaring discrepancy between the two women that makes all the difference in the way in which
