structure and the character development serve to complement this overall theme. The novel opens with Samba reciting his morning lesson in Islamic verse before Thierno, the elderly traditional Islamic
teacher of the Diallobe. When Samba makes an error in pronunciation, Thierno pounces upon the boy like a mad man. He pinches Sambas thigh and then his earlobe, drawing blood.
He threatens the boy with a hot coal. Surprisingly, these pedagogical tactics have precisely the desired effect as the boy recites the verse again and does so perfectly, angelically, which
transports Thierno into a wave of mystical ecstasy, who thinks, "What purity! What a miracle! Truly, this child was a gift from God" (Kane 5). This introduces the fact
that Thierno is strictest with those students whom he feels are exemplary and Samba is the best that he has taught in his long career. The opening chapter establishes
the structural framework of the novel, as it demonstrates the authors reliance on dialogue, both between characters and also the inner dialogue of characters, as this relates their internalized conflicts
and cognitive processes. For example, in the opening scenario, the reader learns the motivation of the teachers punitive actions, as well as the boys reactions to those actions because Kane
