myriad of interpretations. The separation of fantasy and reality is challenging here. Yet, in respect to the concept of a divide between the haves and "have nots," there are many
sentences to indicate that this is so. One example is as follows: "Prosperous men and women gathered by the sapphire-colored waters while caterers men in white coats passed them cold
gin" (Cheever). This is an example of the kind of society in which the protagonist lives. He is living life in a "well to do" existence, or at least he
does so at the beginning. There is a sense that the protagonist, also known as the swimmer, is a part of the upper crust. More evidence of wealth
in the story is as follows: "A smiling bartender he had seen at a hundred parties gave him a gin and tonic and he stood by the bar for a
moment, anxious not to get stuck in any conversation that would delay his voyage" (Cheever). The Swimmer world is one of gloss and money. Weekends are spent in the pools
of the wealthy and drinks are flowing. The problem is perhaps that the drinks flow too much and the money flow has stopped, at least for Neddy Merrill. It seems
that for those like Neddy, money must be had at all costs, but he had a problem too, which is alcoholism. This story is not just about class stratification, but
it is also about denial. It is perhaps the authors intent to portray life from the point of view of an alcoholic. Certainly, as the story unfolds, Neddys life seems
ideal. Even as he begins to lose everything, the bad parts are blacked out. All he can think of is that he needs another drink and some dry clothes. It
