love and adds to the despair of his central characters. In the Act 1, Chekhov introduces his central characters and provides an overview of their connections. Small steps
are made in outlining potential conflicts and in defining the nature of relationships. Of the four acts in the play, this act is the most hopeful and suggests the
most potential in the central characters. Though three sisters, Olga, Masha and Irina, all seem to have a dark side and fall prey to melancholia at times, they are
also capable of rallying in the presence of others to demonstrate some hopeful projections about the future. Olga, the oldest, can see the hope and potential in her sister
Irina, even though she herself seems weighed down by her occupation as a teacher and the way it has drained her of her vitality. Irina finds sunshine in the
presence of gloomy conditions, though her life is not what she wants. Masha, who is the married sister, reflects on the nature of love and the fact that it
changes over time. While each of these perspectives may reflect some hidden despair, they also suggest that change is possible and link the sisters conflicts to the desire for
change. The first act also provides the greatest support for the belief that love can exist even when despair is present. Though Irina despairs over her inability
to be in Moscow and Olga is tormented by her lost youth, brother Andrei falls in love. His love, though, is not one that is approved of by his
