both wrote the screenplay ands directed the movie must have had more than a nodding acquaintance with the real Chaucers writings since he was able to convey the truly humorous
nature of Chaucer. Those who study Chaucer and are only able to see a chronicle of life in the 1300s are missing a key component of what has made his
work endure throughout the centuries -- his humor. This is not to suggest that Chaucers humor is blatant or obvious. That is where the details play the important role in
the telling of the story. The unexpected highlights the absurd and the nuance of one action serves to highlight the true meaning of another action or event. The end result
is that Chaucers style relies on his readers to pay attention and not make the assumption that something he refers to or points out is simply a coincidence. The Wife
