SA146Par.rtf Chaucers Canterbury tales are extraordinary little poems that tell interesting stories and provide great insights into human nature. The Pardoner is a character in one of the tales. In the work, three men at the end are ironically defeated. They are in search of death because they want to get rid of it. This is a conceptual, philosophical piece and provides food for thought. The Pardoners Tale begins: "In Flanders, once, there was a company Of young companions given to folly, Riot and gambling, brothels and taverns; And, to the music of harps, lutes, gitterns, They danced and played at dice both day and night." (Chaucer PG). The first part of this story is clearly set in a very different time than exists now and so it is not certain as to the actual setting the pardoner and his companions are in, at least not until the work unfolds. From the prologue, it is known that he had journeyed from Rome, and since there were no jet planes at the time, one has to assume that he is in that vicinity of the world. The characters are entrenched in sinful activities as described in the first part of the tale. In the story, Chaucer creates a larger than life image of the Pardoner but gives him rather human qualities. The reader is likely to identify with him from the outset and so, when the more selfish aspects of humanity emerge from the character, the reader may be forgiving.
