these tales as they all sit around waiting for their individual journeys to begin. When reading Chaucer one understands that he was a man of wit, and a man of
intelligence. His characters serve to illustrate the culture of the times, as well as present us with timeless images of the nature of man. Two individuals, the Merchant and the
Physician, are men that Chaucer presents to the reader. In the following paper we examine the character of the two men, discussing them separately. The paper then discusses the two
in comparison, discussing how Chaucers uses sarcasm and honesty to illustrate who these individuals are. The Merchant One of the best illustrations we find concerning the Merchant is
seen in the Prologue of Canterbury Tales. Chaucers prologue essentially seems to define the individuals within the stories incredibly well and as such is used for a general examination of
the Merchant. In the prologue Chaucer notes that the Merchant: "In motley gown, and high on horse he sat,/ Upon his head a Flemish beaver hat;/ His boots
were fastened rather elegantly./ His spoke his notions out right pompously,/ Stressing the times when he had won, not lost./ He would the sea were held at any cost/ Across
from Middleburgh to Orwell town./ At money-changing he could make a crown./ This worthy man kept all his wits well set;/ There was no one could say he was in
debt,/ So well he governed all his trade affairs/ With bargains and with borrowings and with shares./ Indeed, he was a worthy man withal,/ But, sooth to say, his name
