Interestingly, Chaucer created a host of different characters and instilled in each of them the ability to tell their own tale as opposed to perhaps reflecting the attitudes/values/beliefs of
the narrator. Therefore, the cast of characters is indeed varied. In this way, this story reveals characters whom the reader may find humorous, or perhaps evil or pathetic.
However, Chaucer also provides four highly moral and otherwise "ideal" characters. These characters are the Parson, the Knight, the Clerk and the Plowman. Chaucer, the
Narrator, observes all of the characters as they are arriving and getting acquainted. He describes in detail most of the travelers which represent a cross-section of fourteenth-century English society. All
levels are represented, beginning with the Knight who is the highest ranking character socially. Several levels of holiness and authority in the clergy are among the pilgrims while the majority
of the characters are drawn from the middle class. A small number of the peasent class are also making the journey, most of them as servants to other pilgrims (Voelker,
2004). The Parson is an obvious ideal based upon his integrity and devotion (Chaucers Canterbury Tales, 2004). He is a preacher
but more than that he is dedicated to God in his heart. The Parson is an example of a man who lives in accordance with what he preaches.
There are no false airs and no pretenses - the Parson is exactly who he appears to be. The Parson is
an ideal character based upon his motivation. The fact that he is a preacher is indeed relevant, but not nearly as relevant as his intentions. For instance, the
