common. One of the tales, the Millers Tale, is such a tale. It is a story of sexual pressure, infidelity, greed, and retribution in many ways. The following paper examines this story, discussing the treatment of the three main male characters. The Millers Tale In this story we have the Carpenter, an older man, who has recently wed a beautiful young woman, who is apparently not even of 18 years of age yet. He describes her as incredibly beautiful and fit for any many, even a lord, as her beauty and sexual presence is just incredibly. "She was a far more pleasant thing to see Than is the newly budded young pear-tree; And softer than the wool is on a wether...So gay a little doll, I well believe, Or such a wench, theres no man can conceive...Her mouth was sweet as bragget or as mead" (Chaucer). Her husbands student, however, is a man who is well versed in seduction and apparently gets women when he wants them and he wants the carpenters wife. He starts making advances at her, pressuring her and telling her that he will literally burst if she does not give in to him. The wife slowly succumbs to his pleas and falls in love with him. They work out a plan where they can be alone together for an entire evening, making love and doing what they want. They agree to have the student tell her husband that he has looked at astrology charts and sees a great flood coming within a short period of time. The student tells the carpenter to get some things together so that all three of them can be saved. They spend the night on the roof and when the carpenter falls asleep the couple take off ...
