Shakespeare we are generally provided with work that illustrates how women were controlled by a patriarchal society and yet we are also given examples of how women possess far more
intelligence and wisdom than most men thought during the time. In light of this Shakespeare is often thought of as a feminist writer. Likewise, Chaucer and Marie De France are
also classic authors who are thought to offer up feminist voices. With this in mind the following paper examines how Chaucers Wife of Bath and Man of Law passages in
the Canterbury Tales, and Marie De Frances Lais, with regards to Lanval and Guigemar, are works that do not necessarily offer us a feminist reading but perhaps a more stereotypical
reading. Chaucer First off we note that in the Wife of Baths story people are often claiming that her tale is one about a very independent woman who
is not typical of her day. In this respect the argument is often that Chaucer is offering up a feminist perspective. However, on the other hand, the Wife of Bath
is a very demanding and apparently opinionated woman. She is the only woman who tells a story and as such she is a woman who others perhaps look down upon
to some extent. One critics opinion seems to support such a perspective: "The Wife of Baths negative image seems only to have changed in the nature in which she acts
- some of her actions seem more planned than before. Her intelligence is revealed in this section in that way, making the reader (or listener) see the potential of intelligence
in women, even though it is still used for treachery" (The Canterbury Tales). And, while she is somewhat comical she is also a bit of a nag and irritating as
