a look at a particular time in history as it involves common people in tumultuous times. The following paper examines the work and life of Chaucer, and then moves on
to examine his classic "Canterbury Tales." Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer was born somewhere between 1340 and 1344 (The Literature Network). He was born in London, the son of
a wine merchant, who was also deputy to the brother of the king (The Literature Network). There is not much known about his early life and education but it is
generally assumed that he was well educated because it is known that he could read Italian, Latin, and French (The Literature Network). Between the years of 1359-1360 he traveled
to France along with "Edward IIIs army during the Hundred Years War. He was captured in the Ardennes and returned to England after the treaty of Br?tigny in 1360" (The
Literature Network). Then there is little information available about his life until approximately 1366 when he is believed to have possibly "married Philippa Roet, the sister of John Gaunts future
wife. Philippa died in 1387 and Chaucer enjoyed Gaunts patronage throughout his life" (The Literature Network). From 1367 to 1378 it has been noted that he made numerous journeys to
other nations, acting in commercial or diplomatic positions (The Literature Network). Then in 1385 he apparently lost his job as well as his home which was rent free because of
his position (The Literature Network). He moved to Kent and was given the position as justice of the peace (The Literature Network). Apparently he was also given a position in
