about the details of his life, aside from his general time period, the later half of the 14th century, and his contemporaries, there is still much known about his work.
The following paper examines Chaucer and his work, as well as the times in which the works were written. Chaucer As one author notes, "Best known for The
Canterbury Tales (c. 1375-1400), Geoffrey Chaucer was the author of many other works of verse and prose. His early work was heavily influenced by the French tradition of the poetry
of love" (Kramer 38). As he matured it seems his work changed and became a bit more humorous and satirically insightful concerning his times. And, in terms of his times,
as one author notes in a review of a book about that topic, it was Medieval times, filled with problems concerning "social hierarchy...plague and wars" and many other changes (Vallar
69). In further examining this perspective of Chaucer, one of the most powerful conditions or elements that relate to the times of
Chaucer was the sheer difficult nature of surviving in his times. It was a time when infant mortality was high, when struggles abounded. One author notes, however, that "in spite
of the dangers of infancy and childhood, and later of the plague, war, or accident, many seem to have enjoyed a reasonable lifespan. Chaucer lived for about sixty years, more
or less" as did many of his contemporaries (Gray 4). Chaucer clearly witnessed some intriguing and powerful times, times of great change in society regarding many things. The plague, for
