Versailles has ... more than 2,000 windows, 700 rooms, 1250 fireplaces, 67 staircases and more than 1,800 acres of park."1 Throughout this castle a visitor can see history, art,
details and truly gain an understanding of the history of the people and of France. The following paper examines the history and construction of the Chateau de Versailles.
History and Construction The history and construction of this castle begins in 1623 when King Louis XIII decided to have a hunting
lodge built. The result was "a little ch?teau of brick, stone, and slate" which was the original Chateau de Versailes.2 The King really enjoyed his little castle that rested in
the center of a very good hunting park and decided to have it enlarged, employing the knowledge and expertise of Philibert Le Roy.3 Then his son became more serious
about the additions and beginning in 1661 King Louis XIV employed his own architects, Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin Mansart, to further work on the castle and bring it
closer to the ornate status it holds today.4 In one picture that illustrates some of the details implemented by Louis XIV and
his architects one can see what was perhaps the simple brick exterior that appears even more rustic as it is set off by ornamentation put on the eaves and the
sculptural elements on top of that. There is molding and incredibly detailed and ornate sculptural elements around the windows on the upper portion of the building, clearly set differently than
the original simple exterior. There is also a sculpted figure that sits where two walls come together to form a corner. This picture can be seen at the following website:
