focuses of interest and gaining public support (Thompson 52). The term "magnet school" refers to a type of public school that involves busing students to a school that is not
in close proximity to their residential neighborhoods (Andre-Bechely 1355). A charter school is another type of public school, one which is frequently established in "local communities as alternatives to poor-performing
neighborhood schools" (Andre-Bechely 1355). The U.S. Department of Education defines "charter schools" as: "independent public schools of choice, designed and operated by educators, parents, community leaders, and other educational entrepreneurs"
(King 729). The following examination of literature discusses the differences between these two types of public schools and the benefits that have been associated with each type. While magnet
schools are administrated in accordance with the policies and programs as other public schools in a particularly school district, the administrative structure for charter schools includes "a governing board and
a sponsoring entity," which serves to monitor both "the quality and effectiveness of the school" (King 729). While charter schools must abide by all statutes included in their contracts with
the states in which they operate, "as well as all federal and local laws and regulations," they do, however, retain a greater degree of autonomy in regards to setting policies
relating to "discipline, personnel, attendance and curriculum" than is found in other forms of public school (King 729). Furthermore, charter schools may be organized along the lines of a non-profit
corporation or "they can hire for-profit education service provides to perform" some aspects of the schools operational functions (King 729). The literature regarding the effectiveness of charter schools has
been somewhat mixed (King 729). In some cases, it indicates that charter schools have been able to raise the levels of student achievement. For example, a 2008 report,
