out by his friend Charlotte, a spider, who weaves webs that spell out words. Through Charlottes interaction Wilbur, the pig, is ultimately saved from slaughter. Throughout the story, however, there is the character of Fern, a young girl who first saved him from death as a piglet. She raised him till he was too big and he went to live on a different farm. In this story the animals speak to one another, and Fern, who visits them, understands what they are saying. Yet, Fern never speaks with them; she only listens and watches. The following paper examines why Fern can understand them but never speaks with them. Charlottes Web The story of Charlottes web is a story that is not necessarily about human beings at all. Human beings play a very important part in the story for they are the ones responsible for the possible impending death of Wilbur and they are the ones in charge of feeding and determining the existence of the farm animals. But, they are not a part of the story so to speak. Fern, however is the one individual, the one human being who could see, hear, understand, and care. She save Wilbur in his early days and raised him, loving him and essentially doing what no other human could, or would, do. Charlotte was also a child and as a child could perceive and accept things that adults could not. She did not think it was odd that she could understand the animals and she would sit, during the summer, on a stool and simply watch what went on.
