the all-too common story of a girl seduced and abandoned by a worthless man, it is a lecture that runs nearly 150 pages in length. This paper analyzes both the
novel and its main character, Charlotte Temple. Discussion The novel: The entire novel is a warning to young women about the dangers of listening to men who will seduce and
abandon them. The author is hardly subtle about this: she beats readers over the head with her homilies about being a good girl, obeying ones parents, and the dangers that
lie in wait for the innocent until a modern reader wants to scream. Of course, much of the difficulty in appreciating the story lies in the fact that it was
written in 1794, and society has changed so dramatically since then as to make the authors observations irrelevant to the way we live now. However, given the epidemic of teen
pregnancy, the student can make a good argument that Rowsons message, to be a little more careful about listening to men who seem caring but really just want sex and
will lie to get it, has a lot of merit. But overall, the book could just as well be titled Young Women Beware! Part of the problem is that Rowson
