First and foremost was emphasis upon "the individual" (Seigneuret et al. 1063). There was also a reliance on emotion rather than reason (Seigneuret et al. 1063). The protagonist was always a passionate person ruled more by the heart than by the mind. As a result, the romantic novels protagonist would always be highly creative and imaginative, who possessed a deep and abiding love of nature (Wilkie and Hurt 8). During the nineteenth century, the Bronte sisters were considered synonymous with the Romantic genre. Charlotte Bronte explored the complexities of Romanticism, in which protagonists were contradictory in "their smoldering rebelliousness and prim conventionalism, gushing Romantic fantasy and canny hard-headedness, quivering sensitivity and blunt rationality" (Bloom 30). After all, in romantic fantasies, opposites attract. Brontes most enduring romantic novel is Jane Eyre, published in 1847. The narrative is in the first person, which accentuates the significance of the individual. Jane Eyres continuous struggle to find acceptance is one of the most compelling evolutionary pilgrimages in the history of romantic literature. She is a lonely young woman who spent much of her life on a solitary journey toward love and acceptance. It was not something she would automatically find after taking a few tentative steps. Her journey would eventually lead her to loves doorstep, but not without taking a series of detours dictated by lifes experiences.
