is also a loss of the simplicity that can be equally as powerful. By looking back to the beginning of the twentieth century when films were still silent the
simplicity can be seen, yet even at this time makers such as Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd were experimenting with what could be achieved in film that was not possible
in the theatre (Vanneman, 2002). Conversely it has been said that Charley Chaplin had "no knowledge of camera direction. His films are completely theatre". Chaplin certainly did not explore camera
use in the same way, shying away from the technical side concentrating on the presentation of the story and what it could be. This indicated the use of the camera
as an eye, acting as the audience but unutilised in terms of the tool that would transfer the image to film, and not a tool in transforming that image. This
can be clearly seen in the film "The Kid". The Kid was released in 1921, it was the first film in which Chaplin appeared, it was also a film that
he made use of established paradigms. The tools used focus on content emotion had experience and the way these are portrayed through the actors and actors expression. The tramp portrayed
by Chaplin had already been used on several occasions and the way in which the camera was used was seen clearing in the way facial expressions were used to convey
