intent. They are ultimately legends of the screen and still succeed in bringing in new fans even in a modern world of film. They both involved themselves in films that
are considered some of the greatest films in film history. In the case of Charlie Chaplin that film is The Gold Rush. For Buster Keaton the film is The General.
As one critic indicates, "In his book The Silent Clowns, Walter Kerr observes that The Gold Rush is one of only two silent-era comedies earning the right to be called
an epic. (The other was Keatons The General.)" (Bourne). The following paper examines and analyzes the acting in both films and then compares and contrasts the two legendary actors in
their legendary roles. Charlie Chaplin This particular film is the one film that truly brought Chaplins Tramp character to life. While Chaplin had used, and developed, his Tramp
character in other short pieces and works, this was the film that truly seemed to refine and establish the Tramp and thus put the Tramp into the hearts and minds
of the public. And, perhaps the foundation of that success, as it relates to acting and the characters, comes from the fact that the Tramp was a character that was
normally bound to the cities of the nation. In The Gold Rush this character is set against the hardships of nature and the frontier. In this film Chaplin desired
to create a character in an environment that would remind people how, as Chaplin noted in his autobiography, "we must laugh in the face of our helplessness against the forces
