the type of rule which led to so many French uprisings, as the people of that country continued to rebel against the extreme oppression of a succession of royals who
refused to listen and/or respond to the needs of the people. The reign of Charles X is one of self-indulgence and self-absorption, which ultimately led to his quick and
efficient overthrow. Therefore, Charles X can be summed up as being a self-absorbed king whose rule was marked by broken promises and inefficiency. Although he was to be
followed by no one more capable, his own reign is best remembered as increasing the level of oppression experienced by the French people. The Life and Reign of
Charles X Charles X was born on October 9, 1757 and died on November 6, 1836, but is best remembered for his
reign as King of France which lasted from 1824 until 1830 (Charles X, 2003). Charles X was born at the Palace of Versailles and was the son of Louis
and Marie-Josephe de Saxe (Charles X of France, 2003, See also Biography of Charles X, 2003). On November 16, 1773
Charles married Marie-Therese de Sacoie, and together they had three children (Charles X of France, 2003). First-born was Louis-Antoine, who was born on August 6, 1775 (Charles X of
France, 2003). Then came Charles-Ferdinand who was born on January 24, 1778 and was followed by Sophie, born on August 5, 1776 (Charles X of France, 2003).
Charles was Comte dArtois, and as such, he headed the reactionary faction of Louis XVIs court (Charles X of France, 2003).
