one of Englands greatest essayists. He lived between 1775 and 1834 and wrote extensively. While his work in itself is worthy of considerable analysis and consideration, Charles Lambs
life is just as worthy. He faced, and triumphed over, many obstacles and each would shape his work. Ward, A.W. and A.R. Waller (2002, PG) write that Lambs
work is inseparable from his life experiences, that it is: "inspired by the influence of
the moment and by a lively remembrance of the past, take their place in the course of a story on which they form a running comment; and it is this
story, chequered by the presence of sorrow and tragedy and beautified by the endurance of high human affection, which has given Lamb a special place in literary history".
Charles was the youngest of three children. His early childhood experiences were formed in part
in London, the home of his parents, and in part in Blakesmoor in H-shire where his grandmother was employed as a housekeeper at Blakesware in Lambs mothers native county of
Hertford (Ward and Waller, 2002). The business of London contrasted greatly with the mostly deserted yet lavishly furnished mansion with which his grandmother was charged with keeping and in
which Charles and his older brother and sister were allowed to roam freely with their imaginations caught up in the mood of the house and its vast grounds and gardens
(Ward and Waller, 2002). One of the most fascinating of the life obstacles endured by Charles Lamb was the fact that
