in business (Rapoport 155). His predictions on trends in business and management have been unfailingly accurate and, consequently, the corporate world is beginning to pay attention to what Handy has
to say about such trends and how they apply to economies and business. In his intriguing book The Age of Paradox, Handy analyzes the current state of capitalism and the
paradoxes that have been produced by economies and political situations. For instance, he begins his book with a section entitled "It doesnt make sense," where he discusses the fact that
in the Tuscany region of Italy, theres a problem finding people willing to pick the olive harvest. "The old people are too old and the young will not
do it for the money" that is offered (Handy 1). However, across a relatively narrow strip of sea, there are plenty of Albanians who would gladly pick the harvest for
the payment offered. The problem, of course, is that by allowing Albanians into the country to pick the olives, Italy may become responsible for caring for these people through illness
and old age. He goes on to list many more instances of menial work that is quite necessary, but doesnt pay enough for people to do it in todays economy.
Additionally, he paints a picture of people working more and more hours of work in order to keep afloat and competitive in todays job market. Handy quotes the
chairman of a large pharmaceutical company that summed-up his employment policy in this manner "one half times 2 times 3 equals P" (Handy 3). In other words, one half
as many people, paid twice as much, to produce three times as much is the formula for productivity. Of course, the people who have to carry out in this sort
