Charles Babbage was one of the most important figures in the
early history of the development of computers, and lived during the era when the industrial revolution was exerting its influence over Britain. He was born in the late eighteenth century
and his family came from Devon in the West Country of England, an area where mining and engineering made a major contribution to the development of industrialisation in Britain. Although
he spent the greater part of his life in London, he retained his links with the west country throughout his life, and it was possibly the influence of the strong
emphasis on manufacture and engineering in that region which initiated his own interest in the subjects.
Babbage went to Cambridge University in 1810 and demonstrated his superior skill at mathematics by introducing Leibntiz notation for
calculus, which transformed mathematical theory in Britain. Although he is best remembered for his Difference Engine and Analytical Engine, which are considered the forerunners of the modern computer, he was
