Sergio Ramirezs "Charles Atlas Also Dies" is an interesting look at the other side of the issues surrounding gender. Typically when we consider gender we consider how the societal
construct of the female gender has impacted women. In Ramirezs short story, however, we see that the societal construct of gender can also impact men. Sometimes these impacts
are positive but other times they can be quite negative. Most often, directly or indirectly, they involve both men and women in controlling positions.
Few women make an appearance in "Charles Atlas Also Dies" When they do they are always in roles that have been historically reserved for the female gender.
There is the obligatory mother and a couple of mentions of girlfriends and chorus girls. Female nurses are the only women we see in any sort of occupational
role. Then there are the mentions of females as depicted in art. The first reference along this line is to the pin-up girls that occupy the pages of
mens magazines. While these are more along the lines of a derogatory depiction of women, most of the references to women in this short story depict them simply in
neutral roles. Some of the female depictions in this story, however, at least hint at the role women play in the societal construct of masculinity.
The second important depiction of a female in this story is a mention a female sculptor who happens to make a suggestion to a man that has
far reaching consequences in terms of the societal idea of masculinity. The third is an even more captivating depiction, however. It is the picture of a beautiful woman
