in the near future, it would be useful to consider the characteristics which are typical of such a leader in relation to major American political figures and from this extrapolate
the main reasons why such an event is unlikely. Webers definition of the concept of charisma is the one which is usually drawn upon by authors such as Willner: he
asserted that charismatic leadership was distinguished from rational and traditional forms because of the personal qualities of the individual involved. Rational and traditional leadership are associated with the maintenance of
social codes and an appeal to rational logic: charisma, on the other hand, is derived from the publics belief in the extraordinary qualities of the leader which are seen as
having elements of mysticism and romanticism rather than being dependent on rationality. It is
evident that such a leader must be able to inspire a kind of devotion in his followers which is based on their belief in him as an individual, rather than
in the pragmatism or logic of the arguments which he puts forward. In fact, the publics faith in the leader must be so great as to outweigh genuine rationality which
is put forward by the opposition. Willner asserts that in order for this devotion to supersede logic, the people must consider the leader as effectively superhuman, and have no thought
of acting against him or disobeying his orders. It is apparent, therefore, that given the
diversity of political opinion in the US, there are a number of reasons which would mediate against the rise of a charismatic leader. For example, the election of individuals is
