The following paper contrasts the main characters in Edgar Allen Poes "The Tell Tale Heart," Charlotte Perkins Gilmans "The Yellow Wallpaper," and Ambrose Bierces "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Poe Poes short story involves a man who has obviously lost his mind for one reason or another. He has lost his mind to such an extent that he is willing to kill, as well as dismember, another human being and then hide his heart. These are the actions of a true madman, a man lost to all form of sanity. We note this even in the very first paragraph, before we even know what the character is going to do. "why will you say that I am mad?... I heard many things in hell" (Poe). He then indicates he will tell us the story to prove he is not mad. Interestingly enough, he already assumes that he has been called mad, and thus realizes there must be some foundation of the opinion we will develop. In the end of the story he hears and sees things that are not really existing, the beating of the heart that the other people in the room do not hear, the "hypocritical smiles" that are not there. He screams and tells them the heart is under the planks. He believes they can hear the heart beat, which they cannot. He is a man lost in his own reality, and a man mad enough to commit murder. Gilman Gilmans story involves a woman who is being all but held prisoner in a vacation home by her husband in the hopes that she gets better.
