in some respects, based on OBriens own experiences in the Vietnam War. It is not a novel that is based solely on his experiences, but perhaps inspired by how he experienced the war and the men he fought alongside. As one author notes, OBriens novel illustrates how a war story "can only be told and retold, different each time yet no less faithful to the truths it must convey" which ultimately means that truth, in terms of actual historical events experienced by OBrien, are not the point of the story (Chen 77). The point of the story is to tell a tale about war. In so doing OBrien presents many different characters, all whom seem to come together to give the reader an overall understanding of the horrific and deeply damaging aspects of war. The following paper asks if OBriens characters feel real, or believable. The paper illustrates how they do feel very real. Sometimes they do not need to be believable and this is part of what makes the story so intriguing.
