As such they are clearly concerned individuals, people who care for others and care what is going on in the world. However, this story, and its character, take a turn
for the worse and begin to suspect one another of many things, leading to an environment filled with paranoia and confusion. In essence, this story is about what happens when
good people are pushed to their limits in relationship to psychological fear, ensuring that good people do bad things. The following paper examines the characters. Characters in The
Exception by Jurgensen Paul is the head of the organization which all the women work within. He is something of a public figure and likes being the man who is
in charge and in control. When the chaos begins to slowly emerge and take control of the office, for example, he seems to be the one who wants answers in
a very manly way, "his first reaction is to march over to each window and door, to check for any signs of a break-in" (Jurgensen 154). This is an image
of a man who is in charge, or behaves as though he is in charge. Malene is the project manager and is one of the younger women in the
group. She is a long time friend of Iben, a fact that was not revealed when Iben applied for and got the job with the organization. Malene is generally banging
up with Iben but also has a ansese of keeping her distance as the story progresses because she cannot truly trust anyone it would seem. She is also perhaps partially
