exemplifies this feature of Hemingways famous writing style. As the son of a doctor who specialized in obstetrics, Hemingway recognized early on in his career the inherent drama entailed in childbirth and the "fictional potential of this life-and-death subject" (Cohen 105). "Indian Camp" is "not about the womans difficult delivery; it is about Dr. Adamss failed attempt to make a man of his son" (Bauer 124). As this statement suggests, the two main characters in the story are Dr. Adams and his young son Nick. As they approach the shanty in which a young woman has struggled for two days to have a breech baby, Dr. Adams explains the womans screams in clinical terms to his son, describing the situation causing her pain and also saying, "...her screams are not important. I dont hear them because they are not important" (Hemingway). By this comment, Dr. Adams is no doubt indicating that he has to focus on saving the womans life, and not on her pain, but critic Margaret Bauer also points out that children take statements made by adults very literally and, therefore, on another level, Dr. Adams is telling Nick that the womans pain is of no consequence. This remark is also heard by the womans husband, who suffered a serious ax wound and is lying on the top bunk, above his laboring wife. When he heard this comment he "rolled over against the wall" (Hemingway). The narrative portrays the steps Dr. Adams takes in preparing a Caesarean section on the Indian woman, sterilizing the knife and his hands. He is meticulously professional. The men hold her down while Dr. Adams slices open her abdomen without the anesthetic. He does not hesitate, or show indecision, or even concern over the intense pain that this causes, but ...
