A Source Characterization in The Letter By Anastasia, for - February, 2000 -- for more information on using this paper properly! The Letter by Somerset Maugham contains classic exemplifications of characterization at its finest. Maugham paints an exquisite portrait of his creations, particularly as it pertains to the females involved in his gripping story. One might almost say that for this author, characterization is all important. In other words, he does not use characters to enhance the plot, but rather the characters seem to take on a life of their own. This is something every writer tries to accomplish. The depth of character is critically important to writing, particularly in this genre. Maugham takes the task to extreme. The work is replete with examples of this. Maugham is able to portray Leslie as rather complex for example, but before moving on to the actual story, it should be noted the author did steal some of his material from real life. That is, his work was based on a true story. In 1911, Proudlock had shot a man named William Crozier Steward on a veranda at her own home (Liane PG). She claimed that he tried to kiss her, but naturally, Proudlock was convicted of murder (PG). She received a death sentence but the the European community in Malaya fought to pardon her, and it was granted, though ironically she had gone insane during her month on Death Row (PG).
