in jeopardy of losing focus on its titular hero. Yet, in spite of Iagos dominating presence throughout the narrative, Shakespeare admirably manages to make use of a variety of subtle
literary devices to aid in characterization such that, with great economy, characters such as Iago, Othello, and Desdemona have strong and well-defined personalities. This paper will explore all the devices
to be found in the first act of "Othello" that contribute to the plays overall characterization and also prepare the reader for events yet to come. This paragraph helps the
student address the topic of setting. "Othello", like a few of Shakespeares other tragedies, is set in Venice, during a time of war with the Turks. The plays action opens
on a simple streetfront in Venice and yet, within just a few short scenes, Shakespeare is deftly able to convey a great deal of information about the world. Just from
hearing the initial interaction between Roderigo and Iago, one comes away with the knowledge that the city of Venice is at war with the Turks, that not all of Othellos
men are loyal to him, and that there remains a great deal of cultural suspicion about the Moors (such as Othello). It is worth noting that the character Iago does
not seem to despair at these distressing conditions, but rather dwells upon ways in which he can profit from them. For instance, he manipulates the prominent racist attitudes in the
city by exploiting Brabanzios mistrust of Moors to indict Othello in his eyes (I.i.). In the next scene, however, the viewer sees Iago consulting with Othello and pretending to be
