sense. This means exploring how films effectively handle complex characterizations, and more importantly, how films manage to do this in a thematic context, such that the characterizations are not only
engaging, believable, and humanistic, but also speak to a larger truth beyond the scope of the narrative itself. Additionally, one must not neglect the visual characteristics of film: for instance,
it is important to explore how the visual elements of a film, such as the use of setting, are able to convey information just as effectively as the narrative aspects.
To these ends, this paper will explore the characterization in two recent films, Stephen Frears 1993, "The Snapper", and Peter Mullans 2002, "The Magadalene Sisters". This paragraph helps the
student begin to explore the characterization that is portrayed in the first of the two films. Firstly, one should note that the reason these two films make for a valid
comparison is that they cover similar subject matter in a sense; they both deal with the controversial topic of teenage pregnancy, and more specifically, pregnancy out of wedlock. However, each
film represents a dramatically different take on the issue, which is expressed predominately through the means of characterization. In Frears "The Snapper", the story follows the lives of a lower
class Irish family as they struggle to cope with the unintended pregnancy of young daughter Sharon Curley. Sharon is unmarried and single, which arouses a great deal of controversy and
curiosity about who the father of the baby could possibly be; this fact is exacerbated, however, by Sharons refusal to tell anyone, even though she knows (Frears, 1993). At first,
