examines two short stories, Charlotte Perkins Gilmans "Yellow Wallpaper" and James Baldwins "Sonnys Blues," and examines what makes them successful short stories. The paper focuses on the fact that both
stories have incredibly intriguing and sympathetic characters. Other elements are examined as well. Yellow Wallpaper Charlotte Perkins Gilmans short story is primarily based on the authors own experiences
as a woman with a creative soul in a world where women were confined in marriage to a point where true passion and creativity was often destroyed or misunderstood. Her
primary character is a woman who talks to us through her journal writing, something she is not "allowed" to do because it only "stresses" her more and makes her "illness"
worse. She allows us to see that she does not have, deep within, a great confidence in the men in her life and their "professional" opinions concerning her condition. As
this story progresses she slowly goes mad in order to escape the confining realities facing her. We sympathize with this woman because she is told that she should rest and
not strain her mental state. She must not write in her journal, she must not be in a room she finds more pleasant than the one chosen by her husband.
She is told to lie down and rest as a cure for her condition. We the reader know that her condition has nothing to do with being overly busy or
intellectual or creativity. The reader knows that this woman has an intelligent mind who wants to explore things and the reason she is going mad is because she cannot find
