This term reflects the idea that we never stop learning, no matter how old we are; it also reflects the idea that as businesses change and develop, their employees have to develop as well, and sometimes its not enough to do a good job-sometimes employees have to step outside the company and find information on their own that will help them keep up. This may be a course at a community college or a neighboring university, but increasingly it means a course of study over the Internet, with the student working at home at his own place. It takes a special type of person to work on his own, without an instructor or the impetus of having assignments that must be turned in on a certain date. This paper examines the characteristics of self-directed learners and describes some of the problems they face in learning on their own. Discussion Not surprisingly, there seems to be no real consensus on what the characteristics are that self-directed learners have in common; the best we can to is extract information from literature on the subject: "Knowles (1975) suggests that self-directed learners are motivated by internal incentives such as a need for self-esteem, a desire to achieve, and the satisfaction that will come from accomplishing something" (Hiemstra and Judd, 1978).
