is diverse and addresses the needs of a variety of clients, using a wide assortment of therapeutic approaches. The following review of counseling literature focuses on the role of the
counselor and, specifically, on what research literature says pertaining as to which personal characteristics on the part of the counselor contribute to the effectiveness of counseling. In other words, this
examination seeks to answer the question of what personal characteristics, in regards to counselors, contribute the effectiveness of counseling. In exploring the personal characteristics that contribute to the creation
of effective counselors, it is first advantageous to define what is meant by the term "counselor." There are numerous professional groups coexisting within the field of mental health that perform
similar function for their clients and "use the term process counseling" (Alterkuse, Harris and Brandt, 2001, p. 1). Historically, mental health disciplines have used this term generically in order to
describe a specific process. Therefore, typically, "counseling" refers to a -- voluntary and confidential process that takes place in the context of a professional relationship, wherein individuals, groups of individuals
or members of a family attempt to gain an understanding of self and others that will enable them to effectively solve problems and resolve conflicts in their daily lives (Alterkuse,
Harris and Brandt, 2001, p. 1). The training, education level and credentialing of professional counselors varies across disciplines (Alterkuse, Harris and Brandt, 2001). From "bachelor-level social workers to
