It is a story that reveals a great deal about the community in which this man, this minister lived, and a story that surely offers up images of religion and how people are really not in tune with their religious beliefs. The following paper examines two characteristics seen in this story, the characteristics of fear and ignorance. Characteristics in "The Ministers Black Veil" Fear Fear is a very big theme, as well as characteristic, in this particular story. The people of this community were used to their minister, Hooper, being a relatively simple man whose sermons never really seemed passionate but were always reliable. He was considered to be a very solid foundation of their community and their faith, never changing and never demanding them to look within themselves. Then Hooper began to wear a black veil that covered half his face and the people were immediately fearful of what it meant. They were curious if he was losing his mind, but more importantly they simply felt fear. "There was nothing terrible in what Mr. Hooper said, at least no violence; and yet, with every tremor of his melancholy voice, the hearers quaked. An unsought pathos came hand in hand with awe" (Hawthorne). They shuddered and were simply fearful of this man whom they thought they knew and accepted as a stable part of their community. When he went to a funeral with the veil people accepted it far more, because it seemed more appropriate because black and veils could easily be related to death, but even then there was talk, and fear of the unknown: "at the instant when the clergymans features were disclosed, the corpse had slightly shuddered, rustling ...
