Numerous events have occurred over the last three decades that have left schools in a quandary in terms of providing quality educational experiences. For one thing, immigration of millions of people who represent thousands of different cultures and hundreds of different languages have resulted in average test scores plummeting to the point that most of the public believes our schools and our teachers are inadequate. There may be a kernel of truth in the allegation because our schools are inadequate in meeting the vastly different needs of an ever-increasing diverse student population. Some schools across the country are hugely successful, however. What makes these schools successful is the topic of this essay. We will review the effective schools research to discover the characteristics, which some groups call standards, that are found in high-performing schools, i.e., effective schools. The same approaches do not work for every school in every community. And, it should also be noted that the characteristics or standards that are considered ideal or the hallmark of effective schools can be misleading. Lists have been devised by observing schools that are successful and by observing principals and teachers. From these rather long lists, an organization or an author will select the most common and publicize these as THE CHARACTERISTICS of effective schools/principals/teachers. While it sounds like one person or one school should demonstrate everything on the list, the fact is, that none do because these lists are compilations.
