described as a person who demonstrates three fundamental characteristics: honesty, morality, and ethics. Though there is a close connection between morality and ethics, there is a distinct difference
and people can express a moral message without applying their personal morality to ethical action. A man of character, then, is one who can act honestly, apply a personal
morality to their view of the world, and take ethical actions that work in conjunction with their morals. In understanding the concept of a man of good character, then, it
is necessary to consider why these three points are important and what they add to the human experience. Honesty is an obvious point, but one that is often overlooked.
A man of good character understands that an honest perspective on the world is the best approach. Though it is sometimes easier to create a small lie to
cover mistakes or to prevent discord, a man of good character recognizes that these are short-term solutions to larger issues. Honesty may have its costs and may not be
the simplest approach, but a man of character recognizes the value in living a direct, honest and straightforward existence. A man of character also understands his own moral and intuitive
self and applies a moral message to his way of being in the world. Others may not agree with this moral message, but a man of character stands behind
his beliefs. For example, Senator John Kerry, defeated recently in his race for the Presidency, was criticized for taking a stand against the Vietnam War. His moral message
was that the war was wrong, and he did not come to this understanding without a painful education. His own service in Vietnam stood as a constant reminder to
