to be a protagonist, or a decent but flawed individual who qualified as a "tragic hero," an antagonist whose actions undermine the protagonist and propel the action, and the catalyst
or means responsible for the inevitable confrontation of the protagonist and antagonist that generates a climax and conclusion. In one of the Bards most tragic tales - Othello -
the characters of Othello, Iago, and Desdemona memorably serve respectively as protagonist, antagonist and catalyst, and with the audience able to identify the role of each, they become immediately and
uncomfortably aware of impending tragedy, which further heightens the plays dramatic tension. Othello is a middle-aged Moorish general who has been hired by the people of Venice to protect them
from territorial invaders. His life has been spent mostly on the battlefield, and he knows very little about matters of the heart. His insecurities are compounded by the
dark color of his skin, which makes him a social outsider. Therefore, when he meets the much-younger Desdemona, daughter of the esteemed Senator Brabantio, he is transformed into a
young schoolboy, completely lacking in romantic sophistication. As for Desdemona, she is the ultimate social insider and has lived a peaceful and sequestered life far removed from any type
