the necessary tenets of personal and social integrity. "When we think about the kind of character we want for our children, its clear that we want them to be
able to judge what is right, care deeply about what is right, and then do what they believe to be right-even in the face of pressure from without and temptation
from within" (Lickona, 1991). GRADE SCHOOL Grade school children easily understand the concept of good/bad, right/wrong; expounding upon this most basic of character traits to include integrity and moral
fiber is the fundamental basis of character education. The extent to which this type of learning should most certainly occur when young minds are most impressionable is both grand
and far-reaching; that educators have the ability - as well as ethical responsibility - to instill such character assets as accountability, honesty, sportsmanship, kindness, manners, the Golden Rule, patience, tolerance,
respect, responsibility and values speaks to the need for greater focus upon moral commitment in contemporary society. Course assignments for instilling the importance of, for example, the character trait of
respect, may include interactive oral discussion, written questions or a combination of both with the help of specially adapted videos for children of this age. Discussion topics would readily
include the need to establish a common understanding of what respect means, how it fits into a childs everyday life and how to react when someone is being disrespectful.
